Muriel Barbery (born 1969) is a French novelist and former philosophy teacher, best known for her 2006 bestseller The Elegance of the Hedgehog, which sold over a million copies, topped French charts for 30 weeks, won the Prix des Libraires and other awards, and was adapted into the 2009 film Le Hérisson. Born in Casablanca, Morocco, she moved to France as an infant, studied philosophy at the École Normale Supérieure, and has authored other acclaimed novels like Gourmet Rhapsody (2000) and One Hour of Fervor (2022), the latter longlisted for the 2025 International Dublin Literary Award.
