About Mildred Pitts Walter

Mildred Pitts Walter (born September 9, 1922) is an American children's author renowned for her over 20 books featuring African-American protagonists, including the Coretta Scott King Award-winning Justin and the Best Biscuits in the World (1986) and honors for Because We Are (1983), Trouble's Child (1985), and Mississippi Challenge (1992). She was inducted into the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame in 1996 and published her autobiography Something Inside So Strong in 2019. A civil rights activist and educator, she continues to be celebrated as a living centenarian.
