Miguel Ángel Asturias (1899–1974) was a Guatemalan novelist, poet, and diplomat whose works vividly portrayed indigenous Mayan culture and critiqued dictatorships. His masterpiece Hombres de maíz and El Señor Presidente introduced magical realism to Latin American literature, blending realism with myth. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1967 for his achievements rooted in the traits and traditions of Latin America's Indian peoples, along with the Lenin Peace Prize in 1966.
