Michel del Castillo (1933-2024) was a Spanish-born French novelist who gained fame with his debut work Tanguy (1957), a largely autobiographical account of his childhood as a political refugee in concentration camps. English. Among his many novels, essays, and plays, notable works include Le Vent de la nuit (1973; Prix des Deux Magots and Prix des Libraires), Le Silence des pierres (1975; Prix Chateaubriand), La Nuit du décret (1981; Prix Renaudot), and Colette, une certaine France (1999; Prix Femina essai), earning him widespread acclaim for exploring themes of childhood trauma, Spanish heritage, and human suffering.
