Melanie Rae Thon (born 1957 in Kalispell, Montana) is an American fiction writer whose work transcends traditional genre boundaries, exploring themes of diversity, permeability, and interdependence from human and more-than-human perspectives. She earned a B.A. from the University of Michigan (1980) and an M.A. from Boston University (1982), and has taught at several universities including the University of Utah, where she is Professor Emeritus. Her notable works include the novels Meteors in August, Iona Moon, Sweet Hearts, and The Voice of the River, as well as story collections like Girls in the Grass and First, Body; she has received a Whiting Writer's Award, Guggenheim Fellowship, two NEA fellowships, and inclusion in Best American Short Stories and Pushcart Prizes.
