About Meindert DeJong
Meindert De Jong was a Dutch-born American author of children's books, born in 1906 in Wierum, Friesland, Netherlands, who immigrated to the United States at age eight and settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan. EBSCO Research Starters He is best known for his realistic portrayals of children and animals, achieving greatest acclaim in the 1950s with five Newbery recognitions, including the 1955 Medal for The Wheel on the School, and winning the Hans Christian Andersen Award as the first American recipient in 1962.
