About Lucy Sante

Lucy Sante is a Belgian-born American writer, critic, and artist born in 1954 in Verviers, Belgium, who immigrated to the United States in the early 1960s. Known for her nonfiction works on urban history and culture such as Low Life (1991), The Other Paris (2015), and her 2024 memoir I Heard Her Call My Name about her gender transition, she has contributed extensively to The New York Review of Books and taught at Bard College until 2023. Her achievements include a Whiting Award, Guggenheim Fellowship, Grammy for album notes, and a Pulitzer finalist nomination in 2025.
