Lewis Mumford

Lewis Mumford (1895-1990), an American historian of technology, urban planner, sociologist, and literary critic, analyzed the effects of technology and urbanization on human societies, authoring seminal works like The City in History (National Book Award, 1961), Technics and Civilization (1934), and The Myth of the Machine (1967-70). He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1964), National Medal of Arts (1986), and other honors for his contributions to social philosophy, American cultural history, and critiques of modern technics.
