Lee Rainwater

Lee Rainwater (1928-2015) was an American sociologist and prolific author who published over twenty books and numerous articles on poverty, inequality, and family dynamics. His most notable works include Behind Ghetto Walls (1970), a seminal study of Black families in St. Louis's Pruitt-Igoe housing project, and contributions to the Luxembourg Income Study, which he co-founded and directed from 1983 to 2005. He served as a professor of sociology at Harvard University for 23 years, advancing cross-national research on economic well-being, though no major literary awards are noted as his work was primarily academic.
