About Lawrence A. Cremin

Lawrence A. Cremin (1925-1990) was an American historian of education renowned for his comprehensive three-volume series American Education, with the second volume, American Education: The National Experience, 1783-1876, earning the 1962 Bancroft Prize and the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for History. archives. He served as president of Teachers College, Columbia University from 1974 to 1984 and later as president of the Spencer Foundation, broadening the scope of educational historiography to include non-school institutions.
