About László Krasznahorkai

László Krasznahorkai is a Hungarian novelist, screenwriter, and writer born on January 5, 1954, in Gyula, eastern Hungary. He studied law briefly before switching to Hungarian literature at Eötvös Loránd University, graduating in 1983. His debut novel Sátántangó (Satantango, 1985) marked his rise as a leading figure in Hungarian literature, known for its dense, postmodern style exploring dystopian and melancholic themes. Krasznahorkai gained international recognition through his collaboration with filmmaker Béla Tarr, which produced screenplays for films including Damnation (1988), Satantango (1994), and Werckmeister Harmonies (2000), based on his novel The Melancholy of Resistance (1989). His later works include The World Goes On (2013) and Chasing Homer (2019). He received the Man Booker International Prize in 2015 and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2025 'for his compelling and visionary oeuvre that, in the midst of apocalyptic terror, reaffirms the power of art.'
