About Komao Furuyama

Komao Furuyama (1920-2002) was a Japanese novelist, essayist, and editor renowned for his war fiction drawn from personal experiences as a soldier in the Pacific War in Burma and Laos, and subsequent POW life. His most notable works include Pre-Oh 8 no Yoake (1970), which won the prestigious Akutagawa Prize, Cicada Memories (1993, Kawabata Yasunari Literature Prize), and the war trilogy Dan Sakusen / Ryuryo Kaisens / Fukon Senshi (2000, Kikuchi Kan Prize).
