Julia Peterkin

Julia Peterkin (1880-1961) was an American author from South Carolina best known for her realistic portrayals of Gullah life on Southern plantations in novels such as Scarlet Sister Mary, Black April, and Green Thursday. She won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1929 for Scarlet Sister Mary, making her the first Southern writer to receive the award, though the book sparked controversy and was banned in some areas for its depiction of a promiscuous Black protagonist.
