Judith Ortiz Cofer (1952-2016) was a Puerto Rican American author renowned for her explorations of bicultural identity, Puerto Rican immigrant experiences, and women's issues across genres like poetry, essays, short stories, novels, and young adult fiction. Notable works include The Line of the Sun (Pulitzer nominee), Silent Dancing (PEN/Martha Albrand citation), The Latin Deli (O. Henry Prize), and An Island Like You (Pura Belpré Award). Her achievements include induction into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame, fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, and serving as Regents' Professor at the University of Georgia.
