About Juan Gelman

Juan Gelman (1930-2014) was an Argentine poet born in Buenos Aires to Ukrainian Jewish immigrants, known for his politically charged poetry reflecting his leftist activism, exile during the 1976 military dictatorship, and personal tragedies including the disappearance of his son and daughter-in-law during Argentina's Dirty War. He published over twenty books of poetry, blending celebration of life with social commentary, Jewish heritage, and the nature of poetry itself. In 2007, he received the Cervantes Prize, the most prestigious award in Spanish-language literature.
