Juan Gabriel Vásquez (born January 1, 1973, in Bogotá, Colombia) is a Colombian novelist, short story writer, essayist, journalist, and translator, widely regarded as one of the most important Latin American writers of his generation. His most notable works include The Sound of Things Falling (Alfaguara Prize 2011, International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award 2014), The Shape of the Ruins (Prix du Meilleur Livre Étranger), Reputations, and The Informers, with his novels translated into 28+ languages; major achievements encompass the Prix Roger Caillois, Real Academia Española Prize, and Mario Vargas Llosa Biennial Novel Prize for Retrospective.
