About José Rivera

José Rivera, born March 24, 1955, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, is a Puerto Rican-American playwright and screenwriter best known for his Obie Award-winning play Marisol and his Academy Award-nominated screenplay for The Motorcycle Diaries, making him the first Puerto Rican nominated for an Oscar. Raised in New York after moving from Puerto Rico at age four, his works often blend magical realism with themes of family, spirituality, and Latinx experiences, earning him two Obie Awards, a Whiting Award, and other honors.
