About José Echegaray

José Echegaray (1832-1916) was a Spanish civil engineer, mathematician, statesman, and dramatist born in Madrid. Renowned for reviving the great traditions of Spanish drama, he wrote numerous plays exploring conflicts of duty and morality, with his most famous work being El gran Galeoto (1881). He was awarded the 1904 Nobel Prize in Literature, becoming the first Spaniard to receive the honor, shared with Frédéric Mistral.
