Sir Jonathan Bate (born 26 June 1958) is a British scholar, biographer, and literary critic renowned for his works on Shakespeare, Romanticism, and ecocriticism, including acclaimed biographies of John Clare, Ted Hughes, and William Wordsworth, as well as editions like The RSC Shakespeare. He has received numerous honors, such as being knighted in 2015, winning the Hawthornden Prize and James Tait Black Memorial Prize for his John Clare biography, and fellowships from the British Academy and Royal Society of Literature.
