About John W. Dower

John W. Dower (born June 21, 1938) is an American historian and author specializing in modern Japanese history and the Pacific War. MIT History. His most notable works include War Without Mercy: Race and Power in the Pacific War (1986), which won the National Book Critics Circle Award, and Embracing Defeat: Japan in the Wake of World War II (1999), which received the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction, National Book Award for Nonfiction, Bancroft Prize, and several others.
