John Barth

John Simmons Barth (1930–2024) was an American postmodernist author best known for metafictional works such as The Sot-Weed Factor (1960), Giles Goat-Boy (1966), Lost in the Funhouse (1968), and Chimera (1972), for which he shared the National Book Award for Fiction in 1973. His writing combined philosophical depth, satire, and bawdy humor, often exploring the futility of action in a valueless world and pioneering postmodern techniques like parody and self-referentiality. He received additional honors including the PEN/Malamud Award (1998) and Lannan Lifetime Achievement Award (1998).
