Jan Spivey Gilchrist (born February 15, 1949) is an American author, illustrator, and fine artist best known for her contributions to children's literature depicting the African-American experience, including notable works like Nathaniel Talking, Night on Neighborhood Street, The Great Migration: Journey to the North, and My America. She has earned the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award for Nathaniel Talking (1990), a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor for Night on Neighborhood Street (1992), the Zora Neale Hurston Award (2014), and induction into the Society of Illustrators (2001) and the International Literary Hall of Fame for Writers of African Descent (1999).
