About James Phinney Baxter III

James Phinney Baxter III (1893-1975) was an American historian and author best known for his book Scientists Against Time (1946), which won the 1947 Pulitzer Prize for History, and The Introduction of the Ironclad Warship (1933). Born in Portland, Maine, he graduated as valedictorian from Williams College, earned advanced degrees from Harvard, served as president of Williams College from 1937 to 1961, and held key roles in U.S. government research during World War II.
