About James MacGregor Burns

James MacGregor Burns (1918-2014) was an American historian, political scientist, and pioneering leadership scholar best known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning two-volume biography of Franklin D. Roosevelt—Roosevelt: The Lion and the Fox (1956) and Roosevelt: The Soldier of Freedom (1970, also National Book Award)—and his seminal work Leadership (1978), which introduced transformational leadership theory. A longtime professor at Williams College, he received numerous honors including the Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. Award and served as president of the American Political Science Association.
