About Hugh Ryan
Hugh Ryan is an American historian and non-fiction writer specializing in LGBT history of New York City, with notable works including The Women's House of Detention: A Queer History of a Forgotten Prison (2022), winner of the 2023 Stonewall Book Award, and When Brooklyn Was Queer (2019), a New York Times Editor's Choice and Lambda Literary Award finalist. He is also a curator who founded the Pop-Up Museum of Queer History and has received the 2020 Allan Berube Prize from the American Historical Association. Ryan graduated from Cornell University in 2000 and earned an MFA from Bennington College in 2009.
