About Hugh Lofting
Hugh Lofting (1886-1947) was an English-born American author best known for his Doctor Dolittle series of children's books, beginning with The Story of Doctor Dolittle (1920), which he originally wrote as illustrated letters to his children from World War I trenches. The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle (1922) won the Newbery Medal for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. His whimsical tales featuring a physician who talks to animals became enduring classics in children's fantasy literature.Encyclopaedia
