Howard Norman

Howard Alan Norman (born 1949 in Toledo, Ohio) is an American writer and educator known for his novels and short stories set primarily in Canada's Maritime Provinces, as well as translations of Algonquin, Cree, and Inuit folklore. His works, including the National Book Award finalists The Bird Artist (1994) and The Northern Lights (1987), have been translated into 12 languages; he has received awards such as the Guggenheim Fellowship and Lannan Literary Award. Norman teaches creative writing at the University of Maryland and lives in Vermont.
