Hilary Spurling (born 25 December 1940) is a British biographer and journalist renowned for her acclaimed works including the two-volume biography of Henri Matisse (The Unknown Matisse and Matisse the Master), Burying the Bones: Pearl Buck in China, and Ivy: The Life of I. Compton-Burnett. She has won major awards such as the Whitbread Book of the Year (2005), Duff Cooper Prize (1984), Rose Mary Crawshay Prize (1976), and James Tait Black Memorial Prize (2010), and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.com
