Hester Burton

Hester Burton (1913–2000) was a British author renowned for her children's historical fiction, winning the prestigious Carnegie Medal in 1963 for her novel Time of Trial. Born Hester Wood-Hill in Beccles, Suffolk, England, she produced numerous works exploring themes of social justice, including notable titles like The Great Gale (1960), No Beat of Drum (1966), and In Spite of All Terror (1968), often illustrated by Victor Ambrus. Her books frequently featured strong heroines and tackled historical events such as the Napoleonic Wars, the English Civil War, and World War II.
