Henry Malherbe

Henri Émile Hermand Malherbe (1886–1958) was a French writer and critic, born in Bucharest, who fought in World War I and won the prestigious Prix Goncourt in 1917 for his novel La flamme au poing (The Flame that is France). He co-founded the Association des écrivains combattants in 1919, served as its first president, and was later honored with the Commandeur de la Légion d'Honneur in 1953; his notable works include music biographies like those on Schubert, Wagner, and Bizet's Carmen.
