About Harriet Ritvo

Harriet Ritvo (born 1946) is an American historian and Arthur J. Conner Professor of History Emeritus at MIT, specializing in environmental history, history of human-animal relations, and British history. She is best known for her seminal book The Animal Estate (1987), which earned a Whiting Award, along with other works like The Platypus and the Mermaid (1997) and The Dawn of Green (2009). A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and past president of the American Society for Environmental History, she has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, NEH, and others.
