Gonzalo Torrente Ballester (1910-1999) was a Spanish novelist born in Ferrol, Galicia, associated with the Generation of '36, who blended realism, fantasy, and metafiction in his works while facing censorship under Franco before teaching in the US. His notable works include the popular trilogy Los gozos y las sombras, adapted for TV, and his 'fantastic trilogy' conceived in Albany, NY. He received major accolades including the Cervantes Prize in 1985, Príncipe de Asturias Award, and multiple national literature prizes.
