About Giorgio Bassani
Giorgio Bassani (1916-2000) was an Italian novelist, poet, and essayist best known for his cycle of works collectively titled Il romanzo di Ferrara, including the acclaimed The Garden of the Finzi-Continis (1962) and The Gold-Rimmed Spectacles (1958), which explore the lives of the Jewish community in Ferrara under Fascism. He won major awards such as the Strega Prize (1956) for Cinque storie ferraresi and the Viareggio Prize (1962), and played a key role in publishing Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's Il Gattopardo. His writings realistically document the impact of anti-Semitism and memory in 20th-century Italy.
