Gilberto Freyre

Gilberto Freyre (1900-1987) was a Brazilian sociologist, anthropologist, and author best known for his seminal work The Masters and the Slaves (1933), the first in a trilogy examining Brazilian society's formation through racial and cultural mixing during slavery, urbanization, and modernization, including The Mansions and the Shanties (1936) and Order and Progress (1959). His writings revolutionized the study of race relations and culture in Brazil, promoting a positive view of miscegenation despite later criticisms for romanticizing slavery. He received major honors such as the Prêmio Machado de Assis (1962) from the Brazilian Academy of Letters, Légion d'Honneur (France), and honorary doctorates from Columbia and the Sorbonne.
