About Gerhart Hauptmann

Gerhart Hauptmann (1862–1946) was a German dramatist and novelist who gained fame as one of the founders of German Naturalism. He rose to prominence with his play Before Dawn (1889), which inaugurated naturalistic drama, followed by his most successful work The Weavers (1892), and received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1912 for his outstanding dramatic production.
