About George R. R. Martin
George R.R. Martin is an American author best known for A Song of Ice and Fire, the epic fantasy series that inspired the HBO television phenomenon Game of Thrones. He won the Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel for A Dance with Dragons (2012). Martin is one of the most globally recognized living fantasy authors. Born in Bayonne, New Jersey in 1948, Martin worked as a television writer for shows including The Twilight Zone before the success of A Game of Thrones (1996) allowed him to focus exclusively on fiction. The series is celebrated for its moral complexity, vast cast of characters, and willingness to subvert genre conventions, including the fates of protagonists. He lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Martin is also a passionate advocate for fantasy and science fiction as literary forms and operates the Jean Cocteau Cinema in Santa Fe.
