George Mackay Brown (1921-1996) was a Scottish poet, novelist, and dramatist born in Stromness, Orkney, whose works celebrated the islands' history, mythology, and rhythms. Notable works include the novels Beside the Ocean of Time (Booker-shortlisted, Saltire Scottish Book of the Year) and The Golden Bird (James Tait Black Memorial Prize), alongside poetry collections like Fishermen with Ploughs. He received an OBE in 1974 and is regarded as one of 20th-century Scotland's greatest writers.
