Frederick Jackson Turner

Frederick Jackson Turner (1861-1932) was an American historian best known for his "frontier thesis," articulated in the 1893 essay "The Significance of the Frontier in American History," which argued that westward expansion shaped the distinctive American character. His notable works include The Frontier in American History (1920) and The Significance of Sections in American History (1932), the latter earning a posthumous Pulitzer Prize in 1933. He profoundly influenced American historiography through his teachings at the University of Wisconsin and Harvard.
