Fred Albert Shannon

Fred Albert Shannon (1893-1963) was an American historian specializing in 19th-century U.S. history, particularly the Civil War era and agriculture. He is best known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning work The Organization and Administration of the Union Army, 1861-1865 (1928), along with other notable books like The Farmer’s Last Frontier: Agriculture, 1860-1897 (1945), and served as a professor at institutions including the University of Illinois, where he chaired the history department for many years.
