Emily Carter

Emily Carter (born 1960) is an American writer of short stories and essays whose semi-autobiographical work explores themes of addiction, alienation, illness, and recovery. Daughter of feminist author Anne Roiphe, she struggled with drug addictions and became HIV-positive before achieving sobriety in the late 1980s, then began publishing stories in outlets like The New Yorker. Her debut collection Glory Goes and Gets Some (2000) gained national attention, with its title story selected for Best American Short Stories 1998, and she received the 2001 Whiting Award.
