Ellen Gilchrist

Ellen Louise Gilchrist (1935–2024) was an American short story writer, novelist, and poet best known for her Southern fiction featuring recurring characters like Rhoda Manning. She achieved major success with collections such as In the Land of Dreamy Dreams (1981) and won the National Book Award for Fiction for Victory Over Japan (1984), among other poetry awards and critical acclaim.
