Elfriede Jelinek

Elfriede Jelinek is an Austrian novelist and playwright born in 1946 in Mürzzuschlag, Austria. She won the 2004 Nobel Prize in Literature for her musical flow of voices and counter-voices in novels and plays that reveal the absurdity of society's clichés and their subjugating power, with notable works including The Piano Teacher (adapted into a film) and Lust. Her writing critiques capitalist consumer society, Austria's fascist past, and the oppression of women.
