About David Nokes

David Nokes (1948–2009) was a British scholar of 18th-century English literature renowned for his award-winning biographies, including Jonathan Swift: A Hypocrite Reversed (James Tait Black Memorial Prize, 1985), John Gay: A Profession of Friendship (1995), Jane Austen: A Life (1997), and Samuel Johnson: A Life (2009). A Professor of English Literature at King's College London and Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, he also adapted classics like Clarissa for BBC television, earning a BAFTA nomination.
