David Livingstone Smith (born 1953) is an American philosopher and professor at the University of New England, specializing in moral psychology, dehumanization, and human nature. He is best known for his book Less Than Human: Why We Demean, Enslave, and Exterminate Others (2011), which won the 2012 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, along with other notable works like Making Monsters: The Uncanny Power of Dehumanization (2021) and On Inhumanity (2020); he has also received the 2024 Lebowitz Prize and the Joseph B. Gittler Award.
