About D. S. MacColl
Dugald Sutherland MacColl (1859-1948), a Scottish art critic, writer, and watercolour painter, is best known for his influential books Nineteenth Century Art (1902) and the biography Philip Wilson Steer, which won the 1945 James Tait Black Memorial Prize. He served as art critic for The Spectator and Saturday Review, Keeper of the Tate Gallery (1906-1911), and Keeper of the Wallace Collection (1911-1924), while advocating for French Impressionism in Britain.
