D. A. Powell (born May 16, 1963, Albany, Georgia) is an American poet known for his innovative poetry often exploring the AIDS epidemic, popular culture, and religion through long, inventive lines and puns; his first three collections—Tea (1998), Lunch (2000), and Cocktails (2004)—form a trilogy on AIDS. Notable works include Chronic (2009) and Useless Landscape, or A Guide for Boys (2012). He has received major awards such as the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award, National Book Critics Circle Award for Useless Landscape, John Updike Award (2019), and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and National Endowment for the Arts.
