About Claribel Alegría

Claribel Alegría (1924-2018) was a Nicaraguan-Salvadoran poet, essayist, novelist, and journalist, born in Estelí, Nicaragua, and raised in El Salvador after her family's exile. She is renowned for her poetry addressing Central American political struggles, including notable works like Flowers from the Volcano, Ashes of Izalco, and Woman of the River, and received major awards such as the Neustadt International Prize for Literature (2006) and the Premio Reina Sofía de Poesía Iberoamericana (2017). A key voice in contemporary Central American literature, she collaborated frequently with her husband Darwin J. Flakoll and supported nonviolent resistance and the Sandinista revolution.
