About Charles Plisnier

Charles Plisnier (1896-1952) was a Belgian writer from Wallonia, known for his novels critiquing bourgeois society such as Mariages (1936) and the five-volume Meurtres (1939-41), as well as poetry blending Surrealism, Marxism, and Christianity. A former communist who shifted to Roman Catholicism, he gained international acclaim as the first foreigner to win the prestigious Prix Goncourt in 1937 for Faux passeports (Memoirs of a Secret Revolutionary), a work denouncing Stalinism.
