About Carole Byard

Carole Marie Byard (1941-2017) was an acclaimed American illustrator of children's books, renowned for her depictions of African-American experiences and African heritage in works such as Working Cotton, Africa Dream, Cornrows, The Black Snowman, and Grandma's Joy. She received a Caldecott Honor for Working Cotton (1993) and multiple Coretta Scott King Illustrator Awards, including for Africa Dream (1978) and Cornrows (1980), alongside fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts.
