Carol Ryrie Brink

Carol Ryrie Brink (1895-1981) was an American author of over 30 juvenile and adult books, best known for her Newbery Medal-winning novel Caddie Woodlawn (1936), inspired by her grandmother's frontier stories, and which also received the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1958. Orphaned young and raised in Moscow, Idaho, she graduated from UC Berkeley, married a professor, and lived much of her life in Minnesota while writing prolifically on themes of family, adventure, and history. Her works also include Baby Island and Magical Melons, establishing her as a prominent figure in 20th-century children's literature.
